If you’ve been looking into getting a pool built in the foothills — whether you’re in Sonora, Twain Harte, Copperopolis, or anywhere in between — you’ve probably come across the term “gunite.” And if you’ve been talking to more than one pool contractor, you might have heard different things about it.
Here’s my take as someone who builds pools in this specific region: gunite is, without question, the best option for foothill properties. Let me explain why.
Our Terrain Is Not Flat. Our Soil Is Not Simple
Many of the properties I work on in Tuolumne and Calaveras Counties have sloped yards, rocky ground, clay soil, or a combination of all three. That’s just the nature of the Sierra Nevada foothills. Prefab fiberglass shells weren’t designed with that in mind — they work great on a flat lot with consistent soil, but out here they can shift, crack, or simply not fit the shape of your yard.
Gunite is different. It’s a sprayed concrete mixture that we apply over a custom steel rebar framework. Because it starts as a liquid and cures in place, it conforms to whatever shape the pool needs to be — whether that’s a kidney curve that wraps around a natural oak tree, a deeper end to accommodate a slope, or a completely custom layout that no prefab shell could ever match.
Custom Design Means Your Pool Fits Your Property — Not the Other Way Around
One of my favorite parts of this job is the 3D design phase. Before a single shovel hits the ground, I sit down with homeowners, and we build out their pool in 3D software. You get to see exactly how it’s going to look in your yard — where the sun will hit the water in the afternoon, how the spa sits relative to the patio, and where the waterfall feature lines up with the view.
That level of customization is only possible with gunite. You’re not picking from a catalog. You’re designing something that belongs to your property.
Durability Matters When You’re 45 Minutes from the Nearest Pool Supply Store
Living out here has its perks — the views, the quiet, the space. But it also means you want a pool that won’t give you problems. Gunite pools, when built correctly and finished properly, last 25 to 50 years. The shell itself doesn’t degrade the way vinyl liners do, and it doesn’t have the flex-cracking risks of fiberglass.
